| How You Knew Randy : | ||||
| Your Thoughts: Worked on on one of his first music videos. He and Pete Cummings were in a band together (actually multiple bands). The vid happened in the basement of some club on 2nd ave. The band played, Randy rocked and we've been friends ever since. I was shocked when I heard he was gone, but of course he's only gone physically, his spirit soars. | ||||

| How You Knew Randy : I knew Randy as a friend. | ||||
| Your Thoughts: It took a while to get to know our personalities, for both of us. But once we did, it was the short hand shake, and the short joke. The story I love the most, Randys' grandfather would dance by the black n white television when whatever country show was on at that time? His grandaddy would glog dance to the tunes , standing by the television. If you don't know clog dancin, you can't get that picture in yo head! I will allways remember that! I love you Randy, Mike Branan | ||||

| Your Thoughts: There was a great musical connection in the early seventies between Madison, Hendersonville and Goodpasture High Schools. Randy and I were the same year in school, he Madison, me Hendersonville. Although the two were great rivals in sports, the two schools were allies in the field of music. Really great music. Some of it down right insane. My friend, Abram Richman and I opened a little coffee house in Hendersonville called Uncle Dan's when we were 15 to showcase ours and our friends original music. This is the first place I ever saw Randy. He was playing drums with Stan Lassiter and Roger Ballard. They blew me away. We were all very serious about music considering our age and there was much spiritual and intellectual philosophy that went along with it. However there could be alot of comedy in the stuff we played. The Madison guys were harder rocking with fusiony Jazz, while we were more Folky Jazz. When we put it all together it got crazy. Randy had a band room over the garage where we would rehearse and have "Wacky Jams" which amounted to improvising the most idiotic thing you could come up with. His parents were the coolest. I'd come down for a drink of water and his mom would be in the kitchen and his dad would be calmly reading the paper after we had just been making the loudest most God-Awful noise known to man. We had a song where Abram played what we called Vacu-Sax, which was hooking up a sax to a vacuum cleaner on blow. It created a continuing blast of sound while Abram fingered a flurry of notes, all backed up by Randy's bombastic huge copper drum kit and the rest of us flailing away in ridiculousness. Right after we graduated my parents moved to New Orleans and left me living alone the house I grew up in. Suddenly Randy became a regular fixture at my place. I was the only one our age who had a place! He would bring over the latest Zappa or something and we'd point at the speakers in disbelief. We continued our music and friendship from then on. When I moved back from New York he snagged me and dragged me to the Castle to record some guitar on his project with Tommy Dorsey and Tony Crow which became Bang Shang a Lang. One of Randy's many great band names, it was actually descriptive of the music. Randy was the very best at coming up with band names. We had a band with Jim Hill that played psychadelic covers. We were calling it the Pete Cummings Trio or something and he definitely didn't like that. So he called and pronounced us the Day-Glo Gods. He did killer paint jobs on my Strat and one of my basses. He moved in with me on the lake in Hendersonville and we had nearly a year of loud rock and roll until I got engaged and Yoko, I mean Cathy kind of harshed the buzz. Randy's tough exterior fooled me for along time, since I was often the butt of his skilled sarcasm. I think it took me about 20 years to realize that he was maybe the sweetest, warm hearted guy I ever knew, and that he truly loved me and cared about me and was proud of me when I did well. I truly loved him, he was my brother and he kept me honest particularly in music. He knew bullshit when he heard it. |

| How You Knew Randy : | ||||
| Your Thoughts: I remember going to the farm ( a house on a hill in goodlettsville ) to see Islands (one of his bands) practice I was blown away. This was jazz fusion beyond my wildest imagination and after hearing Zappa I thought I knew it all. We were good friends since the 70's and stories well lets just say I have a million of them. So many things remind me of him and things we did together. I really miss him, he was a real brother to me. LOVE YA MAN..... | ||||

| How You Knew Randy : Parties in early 70s w/Debbie Roark, Mike Gagel | ||||
| Your Thoughts: As a 15-year-old wild glam girl looking for wild glam parties, and wild glam boys, I found a like spirit in a girl who became one of my best friends - Debbie Roark. She and I would hang out with the older guys because, first of all, we were tortured avant garde artists and the suburban vibe of Goodlettsville was just not where we were "at," and these older guys could get us to clubs and parties where REAL music and bohemian attitudes were being appreciated ... and secondly, they had cool cars, long hair, and drugs. My first impression of Randy is when he gave us a ride home once from a party at Jim Alley's home IN HIS SAAB SONNET. Damn, he was a rock star! :) Over the years, I saw him often through all our mutual friends. I lived at the Farm in Goodlettsville with Ricky White, Mark Seymour, and Mike Gagel (whom I'm now married to) and moved out just before Randy moved in and the place became the Practice Pad. I have many great memories of Randy Bowles - and it's true how someone else said his "cool" demeanor usually hid his sincerely warm, thoughtful interior. One of my fondest memories of Randy is when I was about 17 (I think he's about 4 years older than me?) and we were all hanging out at someone's house. There were some people actually shooting heroin (certainly not all - Randy, a few others, and myself, were not) and I was feeling a little nauseous just seeing the needle awkwardly going into my then boyfriend's arm - and it was Randy who came up to me and touched my arm to lead me into another room, and told me I shouldn't let it get to me, and then began chatting about some light topic and making me laugh. From that time on, I considered him a brother - a wonderful big brother. Living in Atlanta now makes it hard to get back to see our old friends from the Farm days - I don't even know where everyone is - but it bothers me that I didn't get to see Randy in recent years. I hope that somewhere, somehow, and in some way, he knows that I will never forget him as being the brother I always wished I had. |

| How You Knew Randy : Stan Lassiter Band & early 70's in Madison | ||||
| Your Thoughts: Edgy, irreverent and funny as hell! I first met Randy when I first arrived in Nashville fresh from the road myself. I was up from Florida via Macon Georgia...a circuit of roadhouses that I paid my dues in as a 20 something barefoot singer in a 70's rock & roll country band. I'd heard that the coolest guitar player in Nashville was Stan Lassiter so I went to check him out. They didn't lie...he peeled the enamal off my teeth! Low & behold was Randy on Drums and Tallent on bass. Those two railed on at each other all night long and it was so hilarious...like two brothers giving each other hell about the time & feel. That night began a friendship that lasted years. In those days he was dating the very beautiful Vicky Panter who I really loved. I too remember many late nights at the "scrape & beg" in Madison after the gig. I also rember how close he & his dad were and how he gave Randy his unconditional support. The last time I saw Randy was a few months ago at the Loveless on Hwy 100. He was sitting in the front window with his wife enjoying a beer. He was happy & full of life. He gave me a big hug and that was the last time I saw him. Tears fill my eyes as I think of him & all the years gone by. Behind all that sardonic wit was the sweetest guy in the world. He saw my life go through many iterations as I saw his. I think of him alot and sometimes his voice echos in my ear telling me to "please come out and check out the music..." Like the ragged family that we are, we will gather to celebrate his life and music. I will be miss him. | ||||

| How You Knew Randy : By the grace of Day Glo Gods | ||||
| Your Thoughts: When I was little kid tagging along to gigs and rehearsals with Pete and Randy, Bowles epitomized what I thought was ultimate cool and mystery. When I became an adult I was also able to recognize his soulful side and the deep love and loyalty he had for all. He was a beautiful human. | ||||

| How You Knew Randy : Pete Cummings | ||||
| Your Thoughts: I probably met Randy Bowles with Pete Cummings and he was probably playing drums with Stan Lassiter. Randy was a great drummer with a unique style. Nashville will never be the same without him. He was the coolest, a Nashville rock star, a soulful man with a big heart who always looked great. Randy's light burned brightly whilst he was here. | ||||

| How You Knew Randy : we meet at Major Wallabys | ||||
| Your Thoughts: Randy was one of the first people I meet when I moved here from Michigan in 1982 we became fast friends and spent much of the 80's hanging out together and going to so many concerts that I cann't remember them all. I would hang out with him during the Bang Shang a Lang and Day Glo Gods days and always expected to see him on the big stage one day. The things I will always remember is what a big heart he had thru that cool exterier he cared deeply for his friends and family and would be there in a second for anyone in need. We lost touch in the early 90's and were fortunate enough to hook up again at the Boundry I was so happy that he found Emanuelle she was perfect for him and he just adored her. One of the last times I saw him he came to get some roses for Emanuelle who was returning from France he had beaten the cancer and looked great we talked for a long time about his plans for the future he was starting to play drums again, working on opening a club and talked about moving back to Hendersonville to live on the lake again.I was shocked to learn that he died and all those well deserved dreams wouldn't come true, my heart breaks for Emanuelle and all those who knew him. Randy was one of a kind, so distinctive just like his colonge he always wore Rothchild from the first time I meet him to what was to be our final hug goodbye, he had his own presence and the only one like it and one I will never forget. | ||||

| Your Thoughts: I was lucky enough to spend a few nights with him just before he passed. I've not lived in Nashville for years so hooking up with him was amazing. He was by turns sardonic, self-deprecating, and sweet. Same as ever. I love the guy. Just found this site. Will share more later. |

| Your Name : Emmanuelle Bowles | ||||
| How You Knew Randy : We got married in a fever | ||||
| Your Thoughts: As Elisabeth Kubler-Ross has said : All the hardships that you face in life, all the tests and tribulations, all the nightmares and all the losses, most people still view as curses, as punishments by God, as something negative. If you would only know that nothing that comes to you is negative. I mean NOTHING. All the trials and the biggest losses that you ever experience, things that make you say, "If I had known about this, I would never have been able to make it through", are gifts to you. It is an opportunity that you are given to grow. That is the sole purpose of existence on this planet Earth. You will not grow if you sit in a beautiful flower garden and somebody brings you gorgeous food on a silver platter but you will grow if you are sick, if you are in pain, if you experience losses and if you do not put your head in the sand but take the pain and learn to accept it, not as a curse or a punishment but as a gift to you with a very, very specific purpose. manuemanue@hotmail.com |

| How You Knew Randy : Vol State Community College | ||||
| Your Thoughts: I Met Randy at college - we had a couple of Art classes together. Yes, at first, he came across as arrogant, self-centered, insulting, etc. But, as a lot of friends on here have said, that was the "protective outer layer" he showed you FIRST. Then, as you got to know him, the sensitive side began to ooze thru. Anyone who knew him from the VSCC days knew his infamous " Saab Sonnet II ". The ultimate silver sports car { which, I heard, required frequent tune-ups and warm-up periods ], but when it ran ...GET OUT OF THE WAY !!! I bummed rides to VSCC several times in the Saab -- loved each and every one. You could tell how much he treasured that car. I remembber meeting Costo Davis, Stan Lassiter, Mark Tallent, Wade Seymore - the list goes on. I still play piano and keyboards - finally got a complement from Randy - of course he hung around Coz, Stan, not to forget " Turtle " a.k.a. Steve Hill. We will miss you, man - you made an impact on everyone you met, believe me !!! Ya'll can contact me @ : mtret88@hotmail.com THANKS RANDY FOR BEING YOU | ||||

| How You Knew Randy : Friend | ||||
| Your Thoughts: Thought I'd take a moment and say goodbye to Emmanuel. Had I not been working out of town, I'd have been at her farewell party; letting her know that I as well as everyone who has posted here, will miss her, and ALWAYS remember her, just as we do Randy. It is interesting how life takes us in different directions, and those that we once saw often, now we see only occasionaly, such is life. Randy's spirit is soaring, and while I do not know the true definition of life after we pass, every fiber of my being believes (always has always will) that the soul continues. I miss him, Randy my brother/friend, as I miss other friends and loved ones who have passed. I do not believe they are gone, merely transitioned to a different plane, a journey we will all experience one day. Manu... I shall also miss you, someone who is beautiful on the outside and inside, one who was and is the true soul mate for Randy. You are also flying away, though in a different way. Live, love, learn and enjoy your life. It is my hope to visit France one day, and again experience our friendship first hand; should that happen I will be glad; should it not, I shall treasure our friendship. Be well and happy and remember me as I remember you... Tim |
